Hawaii, USA
The Valley Isle — where every beach is better than the last.
Maui offers the best balance of relaxation and adventure in Hawaii. West Maui (Ka'anapali, Lahaina) has the best beaches and resorts. South Maui (Wailea) is drier and more upscale. Upcountry Maui and Hana are for the adventurous. Do not try to see everything in one trip — pick a side of the island and commit.
South Maui's resort district - consistently dry weather, wide sandy beaches, and the best snorkeling on the island at Turtle Town. The Kihei side is more affordable with similar beaches. Wailea upscale properties cost 30-40% more but deliver proportionally -Makena Beach at the south end is one of the last undeveloped beaches on Maui.
West Maui's classic resort strip - 3 miles of beach, the famous daily cliff dive at Black Rock, and the best sunset views on the island. Lahaina town has excellent restaurants and bars. The resort corridor is compact and walkable. Best base for first-timers who want the full resort experience with easy access to everything.
The remote eastern coast - rainforest, waterfalls, red and black sand beaches, and the most dramatic driving route in the US (the Road to Hana). Accommodation is limited to small inns and vacation rentals. If you want to disconnect completely and see Maui as it was 50 years ago, this is the only part of the island that delivers.
The hillside above Kihei - cooler temperatures, working farms, wine tasting at Ulupalakua Ranch, and the Haleakala summit access. A world away from the beach resorts in character. Excellent bed and breakfasts at significantly lower prices than the beachfront properties.
Rent a condo instead of a hotel for stays longer than 4 nights. A 1-bedroom ocean-view condo in Ka'anapali costs about the same as a basic hotel room but gives you a full kitchen (huge savings on breakfast and lunch) and twice the space. The resort fee savings alone can be $50/night.
- Jay Jayyusi, 30+ years in hospitalityMolokini Crater is the best snorkeling on Maui and one of the top snorkel spots in the Pacific. Book the early morning catamaran tour (7:30am departure) - the water is flat, the crowds are minimal, and the marine life is most active. afternoon tours coincide with the south swell and visibility drops significantly.
The Road to Hana is not about the destination - it is about the journey. Do not rush it. Stop at every waterfall pullout, take the back road to Waianapanapa State Park (black sand beach), and plan a full day minimum. The key mistake is trying to do it as a half-day from West Maui - you will miss everything that makes it worth doing.
Humpback whale season runs December through March. If you visit during these months, book a whalewatching raft or smaller boat tour rather than a large catamaran - smaller vessels get closer to the whales legally and provide a far more intimate experience.
The Haleakala sunrise from the summit at 10,000 feet is one of the most spectacular natural events you can witness in North America. Book the NPS reservation (recreation.gov) exactly 60 days in advance at 7am Hawaii time - the slots sell out in minutes. Dress warmly and be prepared for cold, but it is genuinely worth the early alarm.
Lahaina town was devastated by the August 2023 wildfire. Parts of Front Street remain closed and some businesses have relocated. Check current conditions before planning dining around the historic Lahaina experience. Kaanapali and Kihei have absorbed much of the restaurant scene.
Book 6-8 weeks ahead for December-March travel. Direct mainland routes (SFO, LAX, SEA, DEN, ORD) make inter-island flights unnecessary for most visitors. Off-season (April-May, September-November) fares are significantly cheaper.
For 4+ nights, book a condo with a kitchen over a hotel room. For shorter stays, the full-service resorts deliver more value. Both areas have excellent options - Wailea for snorkeling and dry weather, Ka'anapali for classic beach resort experience.
If you're not renting a car, the full-day Road to Hana tour is excellent. For ocean activities, the early morning Molokini catamaran snorkel cruise is the one activity that consistently delivers beyond expectations.
