Santorini

Greece

Whitewashed cliffs, caldera views, and sunsets worth flying across the world for.

About Santorini

Santorini is the most photographed destination in the Mediterranean, and for good reason. But the experience varies dramatically based on where you stay. Oia has the famous sunsets but is extremely crowded. Imerovigli is the highest point on the caldera — same views, half the crowds. Fira is the most affordable with the best nightlife.

Neighborhoods

🏑

Oia

The famous one - blue-domed churches, cave hotels, and sunsets that set Instagram on fire. Also: the most expensive village on the island and genuinely overrun by 5pm every single day. Stay here for 2 sunsets max. Book accommodations months ahead or pay double.

🔥

Imerovigli

The highest point on the caldera - same views as Oia, 30% of the crowds, and significantly more affordable. Known as the balconn to the Aegean. The Skaros Rock walk is one of the best kept secrets on the island. Best choice for couples and serious photographers.

🏪

Fira

The island’s capital - caldera views without the premium, the best nightlife, and the most transit options. Cave hotels here are 40-50% less than Oia for the same experience. The old port is accessible by cable car or donkey. Budget-conscious travelers sleep here.

🏰

Pyrgos

The hilltop village in the island’s center - a Byzantine castle, whitewashed lanes, and the most authentic traditional feel on the island. 15 minutes from the caldera, but a world away in character. Outstanding small hotels, excellent local tavernas, and zero tourist traffic.

🌊

Perissa / Black Sand Beaches

The volcanic black sand beaches on the island’s southern coast - Perissa, Kamari, and Vlychada. Significantly cooler in summer than the caldera villages, dramatically cheaper, and far more authentic. Best base for beach lovers who want to experience the real Santorini between dips in the Aegean.

Jay's Insider Tip

Book a cave hotel with a private plunge pool and caldera view. That is the Santorini experience. Do NOT book the cheapest room without a view — you will spend the entire trip wishing you had the view. Splurge on the room, eat cheap at local tavernas. That is the formula.

Things Only Locals Know

Hidden Gem

The Oia sunset view is a once-in-a-lifetime moment - for about 20 minutes. Then it becomes a 3-hour ordeal of shoulder-to-shoulder tourists and overpriced drinks. If you want to experience it properly: watch from Imerovigli instead (the view is equally spectacular), arrive at 5:30pm, and leave at 6:15pm before the cruise ship crowds arrive.

Getting Around

The local bus (KTEL) connects all villages for under 2 euros. Do not pay 50 euros for a taxi between Fira and Oia when the bus runs every 30 minutes. The ferry port at Athinios is a 20-minute bus ride from Fira - book that connection in advance.

Food & Drink

Santorini produces some of the most distinctive wine in the Mediterranean - Assyrtiko, Nykteri, and Vinsanto from volcanic soils unique in the world. The wine caves in Megalochori village and the Boutari winery are the best producers. Book a tasting tour - it is genuinely a highlight of the island.

Hidden Gem

Book the Akrotiri archaeological site in the morning - it opens at 8am and is the only pre-historic Bronze Age town in Europe in this condition. The preservation is extraordinary and it is almost completely free of crowds before 10am.

Money-Saver

July and August are peak season with cruise ships bringing 10,000+ daily visitors. May, June, September, and October give you the exact same weather with a fraction of the crowds and 20-30% better pricing on hotels.

📅 Best Time to Visit

May through June and September through October are the sweet spot for Santorini. The weather is warm and settled, the water is swimmable (21-26C), and the island has the space to breathe. June sees the island at its most lush - vineyards in green, wildflowers in bloom. September offers the added bonus of the wine harvest season, when you can taste Assyrtiko fresh from the barrel. July and August deliver the classic Santorini experience but with cruise ships in port, 3-hour restaurant waits, and Oia sunset crowds that border on uncomfortable. November through April, the island goes quiet - some restaurants and hotels close entirely, ferry schedules reduce, and the experience becomes completely different (and better, for those who want to see the real island).
