Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted — which airport to fly into, when to book, and how to actually find a deal on the DFW–London route.
DFW is one of the best-connected airports in North America for London flights. American Airlines runs multiple daily departures to Heathrow (LHR), and the route has matured to the point where competition keeps pricing honest. Whether you're paying $650 round-trip in economy or looking at $2,200 for business class, understanding when and how to book matters — because the difference between a good deal and a mediocre one on this route is often $400–$800.
Here is what Jay Jayyusi knows from 30 years of watching how people get burned (and how they get it right) on the DFW–London run.
Heathrow (LHR): The default. American's hub connection makes this the most convenient option from DFW — non-stop, multiple daily departures, and a terminal setup that works. The downside: Heathrow is expensive, often delayed, and the immigration queues at peak hours can be brutal. But if you're connecting onward to other UK or European cities, Heathrow's transit network is the best option.
Gatwick (LGW): Norwegian and British Airways both operate Gatwick routes from DFW. Gatwick is significantly cheaper to fly into, has faster immigration than Heathrow, and is closer to Brighton and the south coast. If London is your final destination and you're comfortable taking the Gatwick Express train (30 minutes to Victoria), the savings are real.
Stansted (STN): Ryanair's London base. If you're flying budget and don't mind a 45-minute Stansted Express ride into Liverpool Street, you can save significant money — but the trade-offs (strict baggage limits, no free seat selection, airport chaos) often eat the savings in time and stress.
The DFW–London route follows predictable pricing patterns:
The 8-week rule applies strongly here. If you're booking economy and your dates are flexible, the window 7–10 weeks before departure is where the best prices appear. Business class should be booked 3–4 months out for the best availability and pricing.
Don't chase the cheapest connection. A $650 round-trip that arrives at 11pm at Stansted after a 9-hour delay isn't a deal — it's a disaster with a flight number. Direct DFW–LHR flights on American are worth the premium in most cases. Gatwick routes are worth considering if you're comfortable with the ground logistics and your final destination isn't central London.
